About

David Ucko

I am currently completing a trans-Atlantic post-doctoral fellowship in international relations (TAPIR) at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP), in Berlin. My research areas include: the theory and practice of counterinsurgency and stability operations, war-to-peace transitions and conflict analysis.

As an adjunct fellow at the Department of War Studies, King’s College London, I am also supporting a Norwegian government-sponsored programme on conflict, development and security, which is currently focused on the use of force in peace operations, the role of international organizations in war-to-peace transitions and the political reintegration of armed groups following war.

My previous work experience includes fellowships at the RAND Corporation, and visiting fellowships at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS-US) and at the Institute for National Strategic Studies, National Defense University (NDU). My focus during this time was on the reintegration of irregular armed groups during and after conflict and on the U.S. military’s approach to and learning of counterinsurgency. Prior to this, I spent two years at as a Deputy Defence Analyst at the London office of the IISS, where I helped create and establish the IISS Armed Conflict Database.

I obtained a PhD at the Department of War Studies, with a thesis examining the U.S. military’s institutional adaptation vis-à-vis counterinsurgency and stability operations in the 2001-07 period. Prior to this, I earned a First Class BSc in International Relations by the London School of Economics & Political Science and in 2004, a MRes in War Studies by King’s College London.
