About the Author

David H. Ucko, Ph.D., is a Transatlantic Research Fellow at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP), in Berlin, and an adjunct fellow at the RAND Corporation, Washington DC, and at the Department of War Studies, King’s College London. His research areas include: the theory and practice of counterinsurgency and stability operations, war-to-peace transitions and conflict analysis.
Dr Ucko’s previous work experience includes a fellowship at the RAND Corporation and visiting fellowships at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) and at the Institute for National Strategic Studies, National Defense University (NDU), all in Washington DC. His focus during this time was on the reintegration of irregular armed groups during and after conflict and on the U.S. military’s approach to and learning of counterinsurgency.
In London, Dr Ucko has for several years worked as a Research Fellow at the Department of War Studies, King’s College London, supporting a Norwegian government-sponsored programme on conflict, development and security. Prior to this, Dr Ucko worked as a Deputy Defence Analyst at the London office of the IISS, where he helped create and establish the IISS Armed Conflict Database.
Dr Ucko obtained a First Class BSc in International Relations from the London School of Economics & Political Science in 2001. In 2004 he was awarded a MRes by the Department of War Studies, King’s College London. His PhD, also completed at the Department of War Studies, examined the U.S. military’s institutional adaptation vis-à-vis counterinsurgency and stability operations in the 2001-07 period.
